The Boxing Day 2004 tsunami destroyed Chinnakuppam Village.
Starting with immediate survival supplies and medical support CMCT has seen this village resurrected over the last two decades and gained local government recognition as doing the best rehabilitation job of all the NGO’s and government agencies working with the dozens of tsunami destroyed villages on the Tamil Nadu coast.
CMCT built 140 new homes for all the families of fishermen. All the fishing boats were lost, being swept out to sea. CMCT built a new fleet.
CMCT staff continue to visit Chinnakuppam providing support for ongoing educational, medical and women’s livelihood projects.
Journeying with a community long term builds deep relationships. Relationships that create space for an open dialogue and a willingness to adapt, change and embrace new things.
