SUPPORTING THE DISABLED

IN THEIR VILLAGES

With the responsibility of caring for three leprosy villages, CMCT staff are kept busy supporting those affected by the disease.

Many of the people who live in these villages are infected with leprosy.

Some are very disabled due to the disease. Medication means they are not contagious. They live there with their families who are not infected with leprosy but affected by it, due to stigma.

Monthly food rations are provided by CMCT to each leprosy patient.

A daily soup kitchen provides a meal for those people who are unable to walk and whose hands are deformed because of leprosy and therefore unable to cook for themselves.

Regular visits are made by CMCT medical staff and physiotherapists.

A few years ago CMCT was able to purchase land near the villages and build a multi-purpose hall cum medical centre to benefit all ten leprosy villages that are in the local area.

Many programmes are run in this building, including self-help groups formed to train women in sewing and other handcrafts.

This enables them to be financially independent.
